The Ahmedabad Declaration 2007 was adopted by the Fourth International Conference on Environmental Education (ICEE) in 2007 in Ahmedabad, India. With respect to 175 EX/Decision 55 which expressed the Executive Board’s strong support for this initiative, the Government of India has requested that the Declaration be submitted as an information document.

Teaching and Learning for a Sustainable Future is a multimedia teacher education programme published by UNESCO. It contains 100 hours (divided into 25 modules) of professional development for use in pre-service teacher courses as well as the in-service education of teachers, curriculum developers, education policy makers, and authors of educational materials. Teaching and Learning for a Sustainable Future is available in two multimedia formats – a CD-ROM and an Internet programme.
In November 2006, around 50 experts from the fields of science and research, government ministries, UNESCO National Commissions, non-governmental organizations and international bodies from more than 35 countries gathered in Bonn to discuss progress to date in implementing the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, and to discuss the way ahead for the Decade.
"The European contribution to the World UN Decade for 'Education for Sustainable Development'" was the theme of the EU Conference held on May 24th-25th, 2007 in the Berlin City Hall. The conference was organized by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Women’s Issues, the Senate Department for Education, Science and Research, and the German Commission for UNESCO/German National Committee for the UN Decade. The participants included 200 experts on education from Europe and other regions of the world.

The Education for Sustainable Development Toolkit seeks to help schools and communities develop a process for creating locally relevant and culturally appropriate education. This Toolkit is based on the idea that communities and educational systems need to dovetail their sustainability efforts. Ideally, local educational systems can reorient existing curriculums to reinforce local sustainability goals. The ESD Toolkit is an easy-to-use manual for beginning the process of combining education and sustainability.
Compiled and published for the 3rd International Conference on Gross National Happiness held in Thailand in November 2007, 'ESD: Linking Learning and Happiness' providing a brief overview of GNH and its linkages with ESD as a means of promoting 'Happiness' through quality learning.
Engaging youth in sustainable development is a collection of teaching and learning practice of education for sustainable development (ESD). The stories from student activities grade 5 to 9 from schools across 13 European countries and Canada inspire teachers and students to engage towards an ecologic, economic and social improvement of their community. Thus teaching practices presented here illustrate how education for sustainable development can have implications beyond the classroom through empowering students in their life as young global citizens.

Zur Halbzeit der UN-Dekade hat die UNESCO einen Report für die UN-Generalversammlung verfasst.
Zur Generalkonferenz der UNESCO kommen im Abstand von zwei Jahren alle 193 Mitgliedstaaten in Paris zusammen. Die Generalkonferenz ist das oberste Entscheidungs- und Kontrollorgan der UNESCO. Sie bestimmt die Zielsetzung und die allgemeinen Richtlinien der Arbeit der Organisation und beschließt über die ihr vom Exekutivrat vorgelegten Programme. Die politische Zielsetzungen und die Arbeitsrichtlinien werden festgelegt, wobei ein vom Sekretariat in Abstimmung mit den Mitgliedsstaaten vorgelegtes zweijähriges Arbeitsprogramm als Diskussionsgrundlage dient. Auf der 34. Generalkonferenz vom 16. Oktober bis 3. November 2007 spielte das Thema "Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung" eine wichtige Rolle. Um das Gewicht der UN-Dekade im Programm der UNESCO und in den Aktivitäten des Sekretariats zu erhöhen, brachte Deutschland zusammen mit Japan eine Resolution zur Dekade in die Generalkonferenz ein. Die Resolution fordert die Mitgliedstaaten und das Sekretariat auf, die Dekade aktiver auszugestalten, und macht Vorschläge für konkrete Aktivitäten zur Umsetzung. Die Resolution wurde von 48 weiteren Staaten mit eingebracht und von der Generalkonferenz einstimmig angenommen.

Auf der Sitzung des UNESCO-Exekutivrats im Oktober 2010 in Paris wurde die Strategie für die zweite Dekade-Hälfte verabschiedet. Sie umfasst vier Prioritäten: Verbindungen herstellen mit anderen internationalen Bildungsinitiativen und Förderung von Partnerschaften zwischen BNE-Akteuren; Kapazitätsaufbau für BNE; BNE-bezogenes Wissen aufbauen (Forschung); politische Fürsprache für BNE.

The Proceedings of the World Conference contain the outcomes of the Bonn Conference in 2009 and provide the reader with reports on plenary sessions, the high-level segment with almost 50 Ministers and Deputy-ministers, twenty-two workshops on a variety of ESD topics, project-based workshops in and around Bonn, a workshop for young people engaged in ESD, and the Bonn Declaration which was adopted by the participants in the closing plenary.
